Choosing Between Inkjet And Laser Printers
There are many decisions to be made before purchasing a printer and they're not made easier by the volume of printers available to choose from. One of the first decisions revolves around the differences between laser and inkjet, but now there is a further choice of standard printer or multi-purpose model.
Other things to take into consideration before buying a printer are what size of print will be required, quality, stock, running costs, volume and speed. Having a clear picture of what the printer will mainly be used for will help considerably.
If image quality is top priority, inkjet printers are considered the best option, as they offer a photographic quality print that isn't achievable with laser. Another benefit to inkjet is that it's possible to print onto a larger range of stock than with laser.
Laser printers are better for larger volume printing. They're faster and cheaper to run than inkjet and good for printing professional looking documents. Lasers are generally more bulky than inkjets as they have more capacity built in for volume printing.
Recently there has been an addition to the range of lasers and inkjets on the market in the form of a multi-functional piece of equipment that is not only capable of printing but has an additional surface for making copies and scans. Multi-functional models are bigger than their standard equivalents, which makes the laser version too large for most homes and better suited to offices.
Manufacturers of printing equipment make their profits from repeat orders of ink and toner cartridges and paper. Therefore, it's possible to purchase a printer at a very low price but then find that the consumables are extremely expensive. These ongoing costs need to be considered carefully. When manufacturer's state that so many prints can be produced per cartridge, the figure given will be considerably more than achievable in real-life conditions. Print speeds are always exaggerated too.
As with other types of products, just because a manufacturer is well known doesn't automatically mean they will be offering the best deal when it comes to certain products. Lasers vary from model to model just as inkjets do. The differences may not look very important but they could greatly affect overall performance.
Such a broad choices means there is likely to be a model of printer that's just right for the task required. If photo-quality pictures and diverse stock are important features then inkjet is probably the answer and it's time to look at the slight differences between similar models. If larger volume runs are needed then the speed of output laser offers is probably essential too. As different models of laser handle paper differently, further investigations need to take place.
Making sure that the chosen printer works with existing equipment also needs clarifying before the purchase is made. Most printers seem designed for PC users but older operating systems may not work without the addition of a driver update. Mac users may find that they require a different print driver before their computer and printer can be connected. These can usually be found online.
