A Brief Explanation Of Plastic Extrusion

In modern society, the average person is surrounded every day, at home, in the workplace, at entertainment venues and anywhere else for that matter, by plastic. It is used in the cars we drive, the furniture we enjoy, the myriad of consumer goods and products we use and touch, in fact in every facet of our lives. In fact, we would be hard pressed to think of a location or situation where there was no contact at all with anything plastic. The method of manufacture of the raw material is called plastic extrusion and once this process is complete, the end result is only limited by the imagination.

Cheap, durable and easy to assemble, polyvinyl chloride or PVC plastic is one of the most commonly used plastics, especially in the construction industry. When plasticizers are added to the process it becomes softer and more pliable, and has replaced rubber in products like upholstery, electrical cable insulation and inflatable products.

One of the most common processes is straight extrusion, but there are some variables, dual durometer extrusion being one of them. Here, a side machine, a quarter or less in size than the main machine runs in tandem with it, feed a separate material to the die. The two streams merge into a single extrusion of double-bonded profiles, often displaying two hardnesses or dual durometers.

The advantage of this type of extrusion is that as the two materials with different physical properties join they combine structural integrity and flexible form into one part. As an example, when a rubber gasket is attached to a metal part to provide a closure seal, the dual durometer extrusion process integrates both into a single piece. This is a favoured method of manufacture because it reduces assembly costs while creating an economical method of improving the performance of the component.

The plastic extrusion process requires some additional considerations to be taken in regard to design. One is the material used and another, essential to creating a perfectly symmetrical shope, is the geometry of the part. Tolerances are another consideration which much be looser than other types of moulding processes, followed by secondary operations such as drilling, cutting and mitreing of corners. Plastic manufacturers are well aware of these issues and take them into account when planning a process run.

There are many processes available for plastic extrusion and certain basic standards that must be met to be suitable for industrial applications. Good extrusion machinery, frequent quality checks and using accurate and high quality dies are essential. While most of us will struggle to understand the science and expertise that goes into making plastic, we certainly appreciate its benefits.

MacBook Air knockoff gets real close, but in appearance only (Slash Gear)

The folks at MIC Gadget have found a MacBook Air knockoff from China called
the AirBook that looks near identical to the real thing upon first glance.
Without having a side-by-side comparison and without booting up, those less
familiar with Apple products could easily be duped into thinking it was the
real deal. The AirBook [...]
